Hello Friend!!

We trust you've been well since our last conversation!

We Are Presently Writing, Rehearsing & Recording our Next Album "INSPIRE" and will release all the details in May.

Please Enjoy Reading Last Year's Highlights!

SDHighlights!

We began the year by celebrating 5 Years of Music with a performance at Borders in Niles, OH with our Special Guests, Mena, String Theory, Jamaar, Michelle Stevenson and Stefano. This performance also marked the Official Debut of trumpeter Mark Gosiewski, who had come on board to bring some more brass to the funk! It was a wonderful evening and we made many new friends while strengthening relationships with those who've supported us from Day One!! Much Love to Patricia & Dennis Nelson, Art Thompson, Mary Ann Bryant, Lou & Anita Wainwright, Jerry & Bea Thompson, Jim & Pat Couchenour (Our God-Parents!), Marian Wilson, Marvin Maffett and so many, many more who are part of the SD Family & Story! We know that we would not be here without you!

January

Thanks to The Vindicator's Guy Dustalfo for his Great Article!
A Lil Taste of how it all went down!

The very next day, we were performing at the Inaugural Celebration of Ohio Governor, The Honorable Ted Strickland in Columbus, Ohio. Here we kicked off our "One Band - Two Locations" phrase (Yes, we did borrow it from VCC!)

The line up featured Mike Austin, Phil The Beat & Jere B performing at the Columbus Museum of Art and Cliff & Nate Barnes with Keith McKelley down the road jazzing out the Franklin Park Conservatory. Unforunately there are no pictures for posterity's sake but we truly thank Lyndsey & Matt for making it all happen and taking such good care of us while we were there!

Our Appreciation to Claire Maluso and the Jason Legaro of The Bean Counter. They've invited us to headline Youngstown's Wine & Jazz Fest for the third straight year. This time out, a new media outlet had hit the streets and we were blessed to be interviewed by the wonderful Ms. Anna Prior for Valley 24.com

September

On September 1, we made our debut in McLean, Virginia at Opus 88! Much Love to Tony Perry who along with our great friends who help to promote us in the area, Robert Smoot, Melanie Schockley, Wendell Billups, Carlos Hutchins, Roger Harris, Darlene Hudson and ALWAYS, Much Love to Carol Boswell !!

It seems Baltimore / Virginia / DC is becoming a like 'second home' to us. We never fail to meet so many talented people who are making huge impacts and are sure to become household names very soon! The Lovely and Gracious Shang is one such songstress who is getting ready to release her own CD and has never missed an opp to hang out with SounDoctrine when we hit the area to sing a number of 'Old & New School faves. Below are a few pics of our latest stop at Opus 88 along with Shang nailing a number with 'The Legend" Vince Chapman

The Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley

SounDoctrine @ YSU
Paul & Derrick on Crusie Control
A Cold Day for Hot Jazz

Rev. David Sherrod, Jim Eschment and Lynn Wyant are our constant friends @ The Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. It's our collective mission to partner with them as they have helped to supply food, housing, clothing ans spiritual nourishment to a large number of people in our general area, so it was a no-brainer when they asked us to provide entertainment for their annual Ride for Rescue on Sept 15 @ YSU. The crowd was great, the food was delicious and the motorcycles and their riders were fantastic!

We'd like to thank Youngstown Harley Davidson - Buell, The Merciful Angels, Our great friend Leon Gettings of Advanced Sound, Charlie Staples and all of the wonderful sponsors and volunteers who made this event a roaring success!

SD bassist, Rob White with son, Jabez showing his custom built eight (8) string bass to members of our YSU audience - Click the Pic to see him in action at Keith's Lock 3 Live Show this past summer in Akron
Derrick George is a 24 year old keyboard genius from Cleveland, Oh - Always full of innovation, Deerick is Minister of Music @ Temple of Deliverance

Another extremely significant transition at this event was the inclusion of bassist Rob White & keyboardist Derrick George into the SD Family. Both are .. >Men of Integrity, extremely gifted and will begin adding their own chapters to the SounDoctrine Story spiritually & musically. ............................................ We welcome them with open arms!

It's amazing how relationships develop and grow from one person to another. Keith explained this phenomena in a recent interview as to how we came to know each other over time - Check It Out! - Cliff introduced us to Keith, who in turn introduced us to Mark, who wasted no time turning us on to Dan who introduced us to Derrick! In the meantime, as Keith was putting together The Keith McKelley Project, he introduced us to Rob, who incidentally has his own CD and project happening in Houston, Texas and plays a custom built 'Robert White Signature Series 8 String Bass' built by Duane Green of Green Choice Basses (GCB) in Houston. .Only The Lord knows who will join the fam next!

By the way, In case you've been keeping track, or don't know where to begin, SounDoctrine has grown into more a family than a band (Think Parliament/Funkadelic) and at any given time, in any given city you may find on the stage (or in the studio) these suspicioius charcters:

Phil The Beat - Bassist, Co-Founder, Composer, Producer, Most likely to show up anytime, anywhere!
Jim Couchenour - Keyboardist, Composer, Producer - No Longer on stage with SD, but stalwat studio hound who puts the smooth sound in the doctrine - engaged in another solo project (more below!)
Keith McKelley - Saxophonist - travels extensively with SD by land, air or sea! Keith most recently scored an endorsement deal with Cannonballl Saxophones and is heavily engaged in his own project (more below)
Paul Douds - Guitarist, Heavy duty stage titan, instrumental in giving SD the well needed EDGE!
Cliff Barnes - Keyboardist - Co-founder, Arranger & MD, No longer on tour with SD, but shows up now and again for a pleasant surprise!
Chris Rhodes - Bassist, Strategic Partner & conduit for major musician network! Chris is On Stage primarily for Maryland, DC, Virginia & Philly gigs, but known to drift toward Ohio and Midwest region now and again!
H Wade Johnson - Trumpet, Entertainer Extroidinaire, Embodies Spirit of SD by giving his heart to audience each & every time. Joins SD for East Coast dates most often.
Trendle Thomas - Concrete Keyboardist, East Coast Region - Funk Facilitator!

Mark Gosiewski - Trumpet - Heavy SD Tour Detail - Mark is Recent Garduate of Youngstown State University with a BA in Music Education & Jazz Performance and probably Comedian as well!

Dan Wilson - Guitar - Tours extensively with SD - breaking new ground with the Dan Wilson Quartet. Dan is a recent graduate of YSU with a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies - The first African American in YSU history and only the second to graduate with his Masters from the prestigious Dana School of Music!

Rob White - Bassist, Son Jabez - Drummer

Derrick George - Contemplative Ultra-Jazz Keyboardist, Minister of Music, Temple of Deliverance, Cleveland OH
Jere B - Drummer, Producer, Composer - Jere, along with his beautiful wife, Lori, recently graduated from the Youngstown Entrepreneurial Academy and will be working hardest during the coming year to solidify Tejai, Ltd. / SounDoctrine Multimedia as a major entertainment brand - (More Below)

Nate Barnes
Michael Austin
Kim Hines
Craig Burney
James Herod, Jr

Much Love, Honor & Respect to these fellow SD Alumni without whose contribution, the SounDoctrine Story would cease to be what it is!

During the Month of September, we also provided music for Neil Kemmedy Recovery Clinic's "Hope Has A Home" Benefit where Son of Former President Gerald Ford and Actor Steve Ford was Keynote Speaker.

Me'na

We were able to share the stage as backing band for the very exciting jazz vocalist Me'na, who had come to help us celebrate our fifth anniversay back in January. The stage was electric as Me'na & Company mesmerized the audience with tunes from her CD "Living My Life"

October

On September 30, we were blessed to partner with Jere's home church, Victory Christian Center in launching their World Missions Month by performing .... Jim Couchenour's "Sacrifice" during the offertory for both morning services. The response was far more than we expected and we literally made hundreds of new friends in a matter of minutes. We broke a record by selling more CDs in our history of any performance, anywhere, ever! To GOD be the Glory!

Much Love to Senior Pastors David & Kathy Thomas & Many Thanks to Pastor Joe for Inviting Us!

November

......On Friday, November 30, we were invited to present a concert for the BSU students of the prestigious Muskingum College in New Concord, OH.............. . This marked an official debut not only there, but for colleges in general! We've always held to an unspoken perspective that traditional college age students were not in our general demographic and may not (uhm!) appreciate our "Old School" approach to Jazz & Funk. We could not have been more wrong! The reception was really great and the crowd wasted no time in participating with the flow! Just to be safe, Jere B decided to bring the youngest members of The SD Fam (Keith, Dan & Derek - although they are very old souls!!) but it was of no consequence, the audience were right with us all night

Much Love to Jackie Regis, who coordinated the entire event and along with Sierra Parm and Brother Marcus. They treated us to a very wonderful meal and made sure everything went smoothly! Incidentally, we took some video of that show with a new camera Jere B bought, but posting the videos thus far have been wrought with a few technical difficulties - we're working through them and hope to have them up on YouTube in a matter of days! Keep Checking!

It seems that November was the month for meeting and performing with some very exciting musicians. When both Chris & Trendle couldn't make one of our key Baltimore gigs, mammoth bass monster Buddy Jordan got first call (obviously!) and brought along heavyweight key man, James Dudley and the funk storm ensued.

Buddy has performed with THE Who's Who of the Famous Famous and is presently involved in his own venture, Beyond Blue that is turning heads twice all around the Maryland area & Beyond...

Buddy Jordon
Beyond Blue

November also afforded us the great pleasure of hooking up with a dynamic saxophonist Phillip Martin, who just so happens to be a longtime friend of Keith's. We were playing Vie Di France in Washington, DC and Keith invited Phillip to sit in. WOW!

Phillip's playing & presence is contagious and we were blown away by his prowess! He is the number one saxmeister for National Recording Artist, Marcus Johnson and has two very wonderful CDs in stores now and we take great pleasure in introducing you to our new Partner in Rhythm, Phillip Martin!

Reggie Kelly, The Musicologist is a great friend of ours who helped make our November dates unique, by adding his distinctive "MC" voice to our shows. He even showed his vocal skills by covering some Marvin & George Benson during our Lexington Market and Cibo's engagements!

December

December brought about it's own share of introductions - let us just point out, due to Trendle's tendency to OVERBOOK himself, but anyway, Romans 8:28 is in full effect as Trendle had set up the opportunity to perform with a 19 year old prodigy who made our second appearnce at Opus 88 and evening we won't soon forget! Rodney Kelley, Jr. is a seasoned pro who has four (4) hands!. He has spent time on the road with artists like Angela Bofill and his jazz trio "Q" would make you think everyone in the band were in their 60's. We appreciated the opportunity to meet young Rodney and look forward to our next time, because there will be one! (Ya hear that, Trendle?!?)

Funkmachine Legend, Elliot Levine covered keys during our Smooth Jazz Brunch appearance at the Marriot for WSMJ 104.3. He nevere ceases to turn the place out, and this display of funksmanship was no exception! Elliot is an uncompormising master keyboardist who missed his calling as George Clinton's Right Hand Man (too-funky), but made up for it with his overwhelming success as the first true MP3 superstar. His music has been downloaded millions of times and his CDs have garnered international acclaim. It humbles to be so associated with a musician of his status. We appreciate him picking up the phone everytime we call.

A Commentary

It's never been our style to get too personal concerning thoughts we may have about a particular issue. We just try to present good music for the Spirit, Mind & Body. But sometimes remaining silent is as sinful as pointing out a flaw. Our intent is to frame our music and lyrics in such a way that we can speak from the heart, but in a tone that would encourage others, especially when addressing difficult subject matter - sometimes people may be offended, but its never our intent to insult, injure or abuse. With that said, we want to express our disappointment to the larger Media Outlets, namely Clear Channel Worldwide and others like her who are moving more toward syndication and further away from local personalities in favor of the Almighty Dollar. It's no secret that this trend has been in effect for the past decade, but those of us who are either content creators (Artists/Musicians/Producers) and/or influential notables (DJs, PDs & Announcers) who can expose the public to lesser known talent, find our voices being silenced in the most cruel and unusual ways more frequently.

This trend in rapidly happening in Television as well. While we understand that "downsizing" is no new terminology and as a company, (Tejai, Ltd./SounDoctrine Multimedia) we constantly watch and appropriately adjust our own bottomline, therefore we do emphathize with corporate structures. What is extremely dangerous, however is that Media Conglomerates are the gate keepers to what you and I see and hear and when that information is filtered more and more, it has a greater opportunity to be twisted more and more - so we don't get the real story from the right sources and oftentimes we are getting information from those who have no vested interest in our local communities. So there goes the local DJ, who knew our streets, because he/she lived our streets and was able to bring a perspective born in our streets and introduce artists from our own hoods and give them/us an equal shot to be heard - Gone is the local News Reporter or TV Announcer born and raised in our home town who could report a local tragedy with true empathy because it affected him/her equally. Radio constatntly feed us 'wind-up' DJs who are mere recordings or syndicated robots that will give you the same 8 songs an hour 24/7, when there's So MUCH great music to pull from. Reporters are flown into one small town after the other to 'report' a sound bite that otherwise leaves a community devastated as they move on to the next city...

Now before we come off as being too critical - we are not mad at anybody or assaulting any one company, this is the trend we are in - it's reality - but you should know this because it does affect YOU. To that we respect, we do appreciate SounDoctrine Music being played on a few Clear Channel Stations across the country. And in light of all of that we mention above, we do know that there are myriads of other ways to get information, art, news and multimedia - but, the main point here is that it's up to us to be diligent and focused to be certain that we don't just swallow before conductiing our own investigation. We owe it to ourselves and the many Indie Artists and Content Creators to see What's REALLYGoin On.

We want to give our heartfelt appreciation to a few Media Personnel who championed our music on the air, but are no longer there, due to the silly politics of corporate downsizing in the media. Randy, Trish & Casey were true professionals, who inspite of the failings on radio in their locales, kept their ears to the street and exposed local talent with every opportunity they were presented.

We Honor & Salute them and wish them God's Best as they pursue the next chapters in their lives personlly & professionally!

Final Gig Of The Year!

Now that we got that out of our system, let's switch gears and very present our last performance of the year. This footage is from our December 16th Show at Cibo's in Owings Mill, MD. We always play Cibo's during our last night in town before returning to Ohio. On this particular night we were extremely tired as we had individually played about nine gigs in three days - just a non stop weekend. But there's always something about the Cibo's vibe and people to keep us motivated. This was our last set and next to the last song, so we were running on E!! - but Trendle started grinding the organ with a solo that took it up 12 notches as Chris settled into this mean backbeat which caused Keith to surge ahead into a new time zone while Jere drilled a solid 2 & 4 on the ONE and our energy was renewed again! This very funky version of "Once Upon A Groove" was originally written by Phil The Beat and featured on the 'Endurance' CD. It was re-arranged by Cliff Barnes for our summer tour and will now forever be a version we explore because of what happens in the following clips. We hope you enjoy our transistion into the future!

Part One - Trendle's Solo
Part Two - Keith's Solo

SounD Reading

At the beginning of the year, we began introducing a few books from our individual & collective bookshelves that have motivated us, molded our thinking and/or otherwise influenced us and have changed or continue to change our present course and pattern for success. Thus far, we've presented material from The Bible to James Brown and we enjoy the feedback we're getting from those who have chosen to share their own faves with us as well.

As we look forward to another year, we are looking forward to entering and progressing through it in abundance, In John 10:10, JESUS says that The Thief only comes to Steal, Kill & Destroy - But I have come that you may have life and have it more abundantly. In 2008, we wish to embrace the Abundant Life.

Abundant Thinking, Abundant Planning, Abundant Sowing, Abundant Havesting.

This position involves the Total Person and The Total Experience

Spiritually, Emotionally, Mentally, Physically, Family, Financially!

One of the cooler books that Smacked us in the head by Content & Title comes from Donald Trump & Robert T. Kiyosaki.

Don't let the title fool you - this is no "The Love of Money is the Root of All Evil" read. It's packed with practical advice as to WHY we shold have our financial house in order in the coming global economy. So put the stereotypes aside and find out why it's necessary to properly plan and prepare for life financially in 2008 and beyond!

Click The Book to Check Out Their Website

On A Final Note, Our new group project is entitled

i n s p i re

As we are writing and recording this work, we want to share seven principles in which we wish to engage the listener:

* Think

* Speak

* Stand

* Live

* Love

* Worship

* Be

Each Song is being written and performed within these contexts.

Pray for Us & Thanks for Persevering & Enduring!
